THANKFULLY, NED âTHE Lairdâ Chapman had far fewer servants than either Glamis or Balmoral. Rumour had it that the eccentric actually combed his own hair. Apart from his manservant, Gloag, an unprepossessing, monosyllabic character who had once been a dumb waiter, the only other occupant in the house was a Mrs Dalziel who âdidâ for them both in different ways. All the others â four ghillies of indifferent intellect who never crossed Chapmanâs threshold â served entirely in the capacity of looking after the lairdâs extensive menagerie. They spoke warmly enough of their charges, to which they had become quite attached, but none of them could shed any light on the comings and goings of the late MacKinnon. Mrs Dalziel had made his bed just before breakfast that morning and had noticed nothing amiss about the guest bedroom. Even to a lady who had a faint whiff of inebriation about her, Lestrade noticed, the signs of disturbance would surely have been evident.
In short, his investigations had got nowhere. And they were still getting nowhere when Gloag, towards evening, announced the arrival of Inspector McNab of the Forfar Constabulary and Sergeant Pond. Bandicoot and Sphagnum had returned to Glamis, where they were sworn to secrecy by Lestrade to say nothing of the latest outrage. How they explained Lestradeâs absence was up to them, but they were to let Sphagnum do the talking. Harry Bandicoot was straight as a die. He couldnât invent a lie, let alone stick to it. To Alistair Sphagnum, however, Lestrade suspected, such things came rather more easily.
